“I Needed a Mature Script to Approach Him” — The Soulful Announcement Video

The beautifully edited announcement video begins with acoustic guitar notes playing over old interview snippets where Mari Selvaraj was asked when he would finally work with the legendary composer.

The video cuts to a deeply vulnerable Mari explaining his deep-rooted awe of the Maestro:

“Ilaiyaraaja sir is a massive dream of mine. He is a divine presence who has been blended into my soul since childhood. The longing to work with him has always been there, but I felt I needed to reach a mature place as a filmmaker first. I needed a well-rounded, mature script. Now, I feel I have that. I just need to narrate the script to him; I don’t have to guide him. He will handle everything, and I can simply sit on the side and watch him work.”

The video then transitions to heart-melting real-time footage of Mari visiting the Maestro at his studio. Ilaiyaraaja is seen humming a brand-new tune on his harmonium for the director before finalizing the association by writing the words “Manjanathi — Ilaiyaraaja x Mari Selvaraj” by hand on a white sheet of paper. The video closes with the line: “I have started sketching my life with Ilaiyaraaja. He is the symphony of my heart.”

Following the grand title reveal, actors Priyanka Arul Mohan and Kayadu Lohar took to their respective handles to officially confirm that they are headlining the project as the primary female leads.

The Meaning Behind the Title

The title Manjanathi holds an intensely personal meaning for the director. Mari has previously explained that the Manjanathi (Indian Mulberry) tree is a recurring symbol of safety, maternal stories, and folklore from his rural childhood in southern Tamil Nadu. He has referenced the word across his literary works and previously featured it as a lyrical focal point in his blockbuster hit Bison Kaalamaadan.

Backed by production banners Navvi Studios and Fortune Entertainment, Manjanathi is locked to begin production immediately. Reports indicate that Mari Selvaraj will wrap this prestigious project before moving on to his upcoming collaborative feature with Dhanush (D56).
