The highly anticipated trailer for the upcoming Malayalam psychological thriller drama, Balan – The Boy, was officially unveiled on Friday evening. The project has instantly climbed up the watchlist of cinephiles as it brings together the creative minds behind two of Malayalam cinema’s biggest recent blockbusters—director Chidambaram (Manjummel Boys) and writer Jithu Madhavan (director of Aavesham).

Clocking in at nearly two and a half minutes, the tightly edited trailer offers a look into a dark, suspenseful, and emotionally heavy narrative centered around survival and parental protective instincts. Ahead of its public trailer debut, the film achieved international attention following a successful market screening at the Marché du Film section of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The makers have officially locked its worldwide theatrical release date for June 19, 2026.
A Story of Survival and Hidden Identities
The premise of Balan – The Boy follows a mother and her young son who are actively living on the run. The trailer builds immediate tension by revealing that the duo is trying to stay one step ahead of a relentless nationwide police pursuit. To survive, the mother frequently alters her identity, operating under different aliases such as Mary Luca and Sherly, while introducing her son as Abhijeet Kumar.
As the narrative progresses, it becomes clear that the duo is running from a deeply troubled past. The young child is heard anxiously questioning whether his grandmother will find and hurt them. Furthermore, the trailer drops an intricate narrative clue regarding a murder investigation, strongly hinting that the young boy might either be an invaluable prime witness or a hidden suspect. The trailer wraps up on an eerie yet emotional note, showcasing the mother and son resting peacefully on a bed while she holds a gun in her hand.
Stellar Technical Reunion
The film boasts a highly prominent ensemble cast, featuring performances from Adhisheshan, Farzana Palathingal, Muhammed Zinaan, Dolly June, Jean Paul Lal, Girish AD, and veteran actress Beena Antony. The casting direction and executive production responsibilities have been managed by actor-director Ganapathi.
Significantly, Balan – The Boy reunites director Chidambaram with the core technical dream team behind Manjummel Boys. This includes cinematography by Shyju Khalid, precise editing by Vivek Harshan, and art direction by Indulal Kaveed under production designer Ajayan Chalissery. The film’s haunting score and music have been composed by Sushin Shyam, with the audio rights bagged by Zee Music Company. Jointly produced by Venkat K Narayana under KVN Productions and Shailaja Desai Fenn under Thespian Films, the film hits theatres on June 19.
