Actor Malavika Mohanan has said Indian mainstream cinema needs more women shaping stories from behind the camera, arguing that a stronger female perspective would lead to richer and more varied portrayals of women on screen. She made the remarks in an interview with Variety India, where she spoke about the importance of more women directors and writers in the industry.
Mohanan said that when more women are involved in creative decision-making, they are likely to bring different kinds of characters and action-driven roles to the screen. She added that this could open the door to a large-scale Indian female-led action film in the spirit of Kill Bill.
She also praised Laapataa Ladies for the way its women were written and presented, saying she appreciated the film’s female viewpoint. The actress, who will next be seen in *The Raja Saab*, said she wants to move away from one-dimensional “flowerpot” roles in future projects.
